Upside Down

To set the stage, as soon as this song came on, I got into childs pose on my bed with soft lighting and the window cracked open and my plants are all perky and I just put all my laundry away and I sank into both the pose and into my mattress, which I realize kind of defeats the purpose of yoga or whatever but it was dreamy. Everything bad in my head kind of just slipped away.

This is a song that was written for the children’s movie Curious George (2006), a movie about a monkey who gets lost from the jungle and takes a trip to New York. The premise of the movie is that a museum is going out of business, but instead of trying to save it, a twat villain child with a shitty pony tail wants to build another parking lot because that will produce more revenue. But the man in the yellow suit goes to Africa, meets this monkey, and wants to save the world. Although the movie is somewhat besides the point, it illustrates a very prevalent issue where people are more concerned with consumption and money making than they are with preservation of nature and its beauty.

To me, I think the message that Jack Johnson is telling us is that love and curiosity are key. I mean he wants to turn the whole thing upside down, find the things they say just can’t be found, share the love he found with everyone, and sing and dance to Mother Nature’s songs; if that isn’t inspiring, I don’t know what is.

This song literally makes me feel warm and fuzzy. It makes me want to love more, think more, wonder more, create more…it makes me want to be more. It gives me hope that there are dreamers out there sending nothing but love and good vibes out. And that makes me feel kind of like a crazy hippie lunatic but right now I’m ok with that.

It seems to me that so many things are upside down and backwards. I don’t want to go too far in depth on this but I think that how we (collectively as humans) go about nearly everything these days isn’t completely good or right. Is that how its supposed to be?

I included the actual scene from the movie because its cute and happy.

Lyrics:

Who’s to say
What’s impossible
Well they forgot
This world keeps spinning
And with each new day
I can feel a change in everything
And as the surface breaks reflections fade
But in some ways they remain the same
And as my mind begins to spread its wings
There’s no stopping curiosity

I want to turn the whole thing upside down
I’ll find the things they say just can’t be found
I’ll share this love I find with everyone
We’ll sing and dance to Mother Nature’s songs
I don’t want this feeling to go away

Who’s to say
I can’t do everything
Well I can try
And as I roll along I begin to find
Things aren’t always just what they seem

I want to turn the whole thing upside down
I’ll find the things they say just can’t be found
I’ll share this love I find with everyone
We’ll sing and dance to Mother Nature’s songs
This world keeps spinning and there’s no time to waste
Well it all keeps spinning spinning round and round and

Upside down
Who’s to say what’s impossible and can’t be found
I don’t want this feeling to go away

Please don’t go away
Please don’t go away
Please don’t go away
Is this how it’s supposed to be
Is this how it’s supposed to be
