The song that I chose was The Fighter by Gym Class Heroes ft. Ryan Tedder. It’s a very upbeat and fast song that I’ve been listening to for the past few years whenever I want to feel motivated. While the song doesn’t have much to do with the environment, it’s a song that inspires a lot of hope—the message of the song is really to just never give up in achieving something. The song focuses on telling the story of a fighter who was constantly told to give up on his dreams but persisted. That sounds cheesy and all but the song’s pretty good I swear. The band, Gym Class Heroes, interestingly was first created when the lead singer, Travie McCoy, met the band’s future drummer Matt McGinley during their high school gym class. The song was released in May of 2012 right before the Summer Olympics. At the very beginning of the music video, an Olympic gymnast, John Orozco, appears and says that he’s a fighter. I feel that the timing of the release of the song was purposeful in order to really send the message of the song to those who were going to soon watch the Olympics and be inspired.
As I briefly touched on before, I feel that the song does a lot to inspire and motivate people to do the things that they want to do. A connection could probably be made to the environmental crisis since people often feel discouraged about the future of the earth and don’t want to take action. Personally, this song has directly helped me persist in doing things in the past, since I’d listen to this song and instantly start taking action. The lyrics to the song really stress the idea of not only persevering, but persevering in the face of adversity and pressure from others not to. Obviously, this is a lot like the situation nowadays concerning environmental awareness and helping the planet.
