Musical and Political Inspiration

Music plays a big role in my life and is extremely powerful. The song that I chose for this blog post is Found/Tonight by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt. It’s  a mashup between Hamilton’s “The Story of Tonight” and Dear Evan Hansen’s “You Will Be Found”, and was written to benefit #Marchforourlives and release March 19, 2018 A portion of the proceeds from this song go to the Mach For Our Lives Initiative.

In a press statement, Miranda spoke out about the Parkland, Florida mass school shooting and the decision to donate the song’s proceeds to the March For Our Lives initiative saying: “In the wake of Parkland, I was awestruck by the strength and leadership of the students and their ability to speak truth to power. In the midst of their grief, they mobilized the youth of our nation and created a movement. This is their moment. Not just for themselves, but for all of us. This song is my way of helping to raise funds and awareness for their efforts, and to say Thank you, and that we are with you so let’s keep fighting, together. March For Our Lives is created by, inspired by, and led by students of all backgrounds across the country. Their mission is to speak out against gun violence by making sure that no special interest group or political agenda gets in the way of the timely passage of legislation that addresses gun violence issues. On March 24, 2018, people marched for their lives to demand that their lives and safety become a priority, and that gun violence and mass shootings in our schools must end. Many artists came to support the movement including Jennifer Hudson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Miley Cyrus, Ben Platt, Demi Lovato and more.

The song makes me feel empowered and like I can help change the world. For many others, I know it has ignited a flame in them too. All the lyrics in this song are present for a reason. Right in the beginning, Platt sings “We may not yet have reached our glory But I will gladly join the fight” This opening is powerful saying that we have not reached justice, but I will join and take part in the movement.

Here are the lyrics:

[Ben Platt:]
We may not yet have reached our glory
But I will gladly join the fight
And when our children tell their story
They’ll tell the story of tonight
They’ll tell the story of tonight
Tonight

[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
Have you ever felt like nobody was there?
Have you ever felt forgotten in the middle of nowhere?
Have you ever felt like you could disappear?
Like you could fall, and no one would hear?

[Ben Platt:]
Well, let that lonely feeling wash away
[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
All we see is light
[Ben Platt:]
‘Cause maybe there’s a reason to believe you’ll be okay
[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
For forever
[Ben Platt:]
‘Cause when you don’t feel strong enough to stand
You can reach, reach out your hand

And oh
[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
Raise a glass to freedom
Something they can never take away
[Ben Platt:]
Oh
[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
No matter what they tell you
[Ben Platt:]
Someone will coming running
They’ll take you home
[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
Raise a glass to all of us
[Both:]
Tomorrow there’ll be more of us
[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
Telling the story of tonight
[Ben Platt:]
Out of the shadows
[Ben Platt (Lin-Manuel Miranda):]
The morning is breaking (they’ll tell the story of)
And all is new (tonight)
[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
All is new
[Ben Platt:]
All is new
[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
It’s only a matter of
[Both:]
Time

Even when the dark comes crashing through
When you need a friend to carry you
When you’re broken on the ground
You will be found
So let the sun come streaming in
‘Cause you’ll reach up and you’ll rise again
If you only look around
You will be found

[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
And when our children tell their story
[Ben Platt:]
You will be found
[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
They’ll tell the story of tonight
[Ben Platt:]
Oh
[Lin-Manuel Miranda:]
No matter what they tell you
[Ben Platt:]
Tomorrow there’ll be more of us
[Both:]
Telling the story of tonight
The story of tonight
