Music and Political Inspiration

The Song I selected was This Is America – Childish Gambino.  The reason I chose this song isn’t necessarily because of how much impact this song caused on pop culture but because of how viral this song became.  I think this song goes to show how much of the community is being reached and taught about this song but maybe don’t realize how politically charged this song is.  The artist wouldn’t even comment about what symbolism was used in this song because he wanted to leave it up to the viewers interpretation and for them to figure out the hidden meanings behind some of the scenes.

The political context around the whole song is all of america and what is socially unacceptable according to the artist in american culture all the way from guns and violence to the enslavement of black people and even after with the Jim Crow Laws.  Instead of going into every aspect of the song and what it could mean or does mean, I am just going to explain how the artist got his core values across to the audience.

One of the main ways that the artist got his message across to the audience was through a great deal of symbolism.  This was a magnificent way of getting his message across because to understand and figure out more about something the viewer would have to do some digging into american history and the oppression of certain groups to figure out the meaning behind some scenes in the music video.

The video made me feel sad and slightly disturbed because of how real many of the scenes were.  It really put some things as they are in American society and what is shown throughout media constantly, which is the brutality that some groups such as Black Lives Matter go through or even minority groups being hurt by figures of authority.  I do feel like the video is over dramatized and for that I am not sure how I feel but I think to some groups not willing to see the horror that some groups face in our society it can really put a damper on how they want to view life to how it can really be for some.

This song is very impactful to me and really lets me know that I have no idea what some groups go through and how hard it must be to grow up in some situations.  I cannot say anything about these situations either because I have never been an obvious victim for institutional racism.  As long as I live I will never know on a personal level what some people have to face because of our true colors in the earlier days of the United States.

This Is America – Childish Gambino
