Creating a space for free flowing thoughts is an interesting task. It is all too often that people allow themselves to be consumed by the daily hustle and bustle of modern life, and much too infrequently that those same people, myself included, set aside time to simply stop… and listen. Listen, not to the worries of tomorrow or the concerns of past experience, but rather, to the voice of the present moment and the voice that dares to dream of a better future. These thoughts are easily muted or shot down by doubt, largely fueled by an immediate attempt to inspect the logistics of bringing such a fantasy to life. However, creating such spaces for such thoughts is very important when becoming inspired and instilling the motivation needed to bring an idea into the physical world of reality.
In a previous course I took, similar moments, or spaces, were referred to as ‘islands of silence’. Most of the time our brains are so busy and full that there isn’t enough space to have deep thoughts. These islands of silence give us that space and allow us to realized that we know a lot more, and have a lot more to say about various topics than we may have originally thought. It opens the doorway to being truly inspired and driven.
After spending a good length of time deliberating over what song to use for this blog post, I remembered a music video I watched a while back that had really inspired me: Pharrell Williams’ Freedom, released in 2015. (Some lyrics bellow)
Man’s red flower
It’s in every living thing
Mind, use your power
Spirit, use your wings
‘Cause you still believe
When a baby first breathes
When night sees sunrise
When the whale hunts in the sea
When man recognizes
Atoms in the air
Organisms in the sea
The son and, yes, man
Are made of the same things
The music video illustrates the political and social context of the piece; the history of where we came from and where we are today as a society of humans living on this earth is strongly impressed upon viewers and listeners. Images are shown of freedom with many different connotations: The freedom of a group of people to oppress another group, the freedom of a community of people to stand up to those oppressors and fight for their rights, and the freedom of individuals to do amazing liberating feats and accomplish the unimaginable. All these images and lyrics express a few ideas and values to me. For one, they tell a story of proof that communities, and people as a whole, harness the power to overcome great challenges and really make an impact. Secondly, the idea that we are all one in the same. We are all connected and strive for the same basic goals. Furthermore, the life on this earth is not separate from us and our endeavors, but very much a part of them.
While listening to this song I am reminded of these important values. I am reminded of what we are able to accomplish when we all come together for one goal. This opens my mind up to dream a bit bigger and to see a future in a more positive light.
A sustainable economic system is possible. We already have the tools and the resources to make it happen. What’s left to do, however, is to unite for one goal so that we can better collaborate and brainstorm specific solutions to drive us closer to a more environmentally friendly way of living. In the grand scheme of things, we are all in this together, so why not start acting like it?
